The Caged Bird by Maya Angelou is a poem that talks about a bird struggling in its captivity. It wants to be free. The poor bird wonders what life is like outside of the cage. Every day the bird hopes for a better tomorrow.
The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom is a remarkable true story about Corrie, the main character, who was arrested for helping the Jews during World War ll. Fighting to survive, she and her family get sent to the concentration camps in Germany where they are held captive by the German soldiers.
The Caged Bird and The Hiding Place are extremely similar. Both talk about being in captivity and hoping for a better tomorrow. They both acknowledge the fact that they feel like there is no way out. In The Caged Bird, it says “The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still.” Both the bird and Corrie are filled with fear about the unknown. They both long for the life they once had.
Freedom is a major theme for both The Hiding Place and The Caged Bird. Freedom is both very important to the bird and for Corrie. They both long for the freedom they once had. In The Caged Bird it says, “his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom.” This states that the bird is hoping for freedom in the midst of trial. A similar statement from Corrie ten Boom appears in The Hiding Place that says, “Forgiveness is to set a prisoner free, and to realize the prisoner was you.” This demonstrates how Corrie felt the pressing need for freedom.
John 8:36 says, “ So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Therefore, real freedom is from Jesus. When you understand what Jesus went through for you, it changes how you view freedom. So, whether you feel freedom on a vacation or you don’t feel freedom in a concentration camp, it doesn’t change that we are free from our sins because of the incredible love of Jesus.
